About Our Community
Redmond, OR senior living
Brookdale Redmond, formerly Emeritus at Cougar Springs, is a Redmond, OR senior living community that provides independent living, assisted living and memory care for seniors. This beautiful small town of 13,000 sits 3,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the majestic Cascade Mountains, including Mt. Bachelor, the Three Sisters, Black Butte, Mount Washington and Mount Jefferson.
Just 20 miles from Cougar Springs is Smith Rock State Park, where residents love to watch rock climbers from all over the world rappel hundreds of feet down into its deep river canyon. We are also close to Century Drive, which runs from the city of Bend to Mt. Bachelor Ski Area and passes through lush forests, lava lands, open meadows and by dozens of lakes. Our location in the heart of Central Oregon places our community in one of the most popular destination areas in the Pacific Northwest – and even in the winter, it’s warm, thanks to its High Desert altitude.
This is a fantastic part of the country, with its splendid mountains, spectacular scenic drives and many natural wonders such as Smith Rock, one of the most rigorous rock climbing destinations in the world, Lake Billy Chinook and the Deschutes and Crooked Rivers. Plus we are just a half hour from Bend and the Three Sisters. With so much nearby, we’re always on the go! For those residents who are able, we occasionally will make the five-hour loop tour around Century Drive to view volcanic lakes and mountains, meadows and lava formations. A stop for lunch is always part of the adventure. The High Desert Museum in Bend is less than an hour’s drive down Route 97. There, residents view wildlife in their natural settings and experience the sights and sounds of those who lived and worked in this part of the West long ago. Beyond the museum are sweeping vistas of the Old West, along with many paved walking trails. Our senior living community is also located close to Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast, a favorite overnight destination for its outlet malls, beach walks, great restaurants and casino.
A Wonderful Selection
Our two-story community offers 88 senior apartments, 62 of which are dedicated to our assisted living residents, 24 for memory care residents, and we offer two independent cottages. Our assisted living apartments included 346-square-foot studios and 638-square-foot one bedrooms. All units have a kitchenette with full refrigerator, microwave, and sink surrounded by cabinets; spacious private bath with no-lip showers, integrated hand grips and vanities; a walk-in closet with lighting; individual temperature control; wall-to-wall carpeting; and floor-to-ceiling windows. Each apartment also provide three emergency pulls; if a resident is not able to get out of bed without assistance, one of the pulls can be placed directly over their bed. Residents can bring in their own furniture and decorate their apartments any way they wish. Apartments facing west have views of the Cascade Mountains; those facing east have views of a fenced-in paddock with horses. Our lovely cottages for our independent residents feature two bedrooms and two full baths, gas fireplaces, a garage and small patio in the back. In our memory care community, our 288-square-foot studios have three large windows, a skylight and integrated book cases and closets. Two apartments are connected by a full bath shared by two female or two male residents.
The entry to Brookdale Redmond makes a wonderful presentation, with its grand staircase, huge windows and a ceiling that extends to the second story. The entry is always decorated for the season, with lovely flower arrangements. Just off the entry is our living room, featuring a Wii machine, large television, gas fireplace, couch and chairs – and our pet cockatoo, Molly, a rescue bird from the Joshua Foundation.
Our spacious and open dining room is absolutely beautiful, with high ceilings that extend two floors, large windows and an area offering beverages and snacks 24 hours a day. Off to the left is a small private dining room, where residents can enjoy an intimate dinner with family and friends, as well as our postal area, where residents receive mail in their own private mail boxes.
Our home-like community is designed as a square; 11 times around equals one mile, making it the perfect indoor walk. In every corner on both floors is a settee with books, some with gas fireplaces. These areas are also used for many of our activities. Upstairs is our beautiful private Jacuzzi spa bath, with side mount bath tub. Residents simply need to let a Resident Assistant know they’d like to use the spa, and the RA will get the bath ready and help them out if needed. In the middle of our community is a courtyard with a lovely rock fountain and rose garden with individual rose bushes dedicated to those of our residents who have passed on.
We also have walking paths that are lit for nighttime strolls. Our Great Room is the location for most of our meetings, for our Bridge Club and for presentations given by outside doctors who have been invited in to speak with our residents on various topics related to senior health. Each day at Cougar Springs is about living life to the fullest and letting us take care of all the mundane daily chores.
Strong, Caring Professional Relationships
Redmond offers outstanding medical facilities, including St. Charles Hospital, with which we work closely with its discharge planners, and Redmond Healthcare, a skilled nursing centers, such as Redmond Rehabilitation, Redmond Sisters Hospice, Partners and Care Home Health. Should residents need onsite rehabilitation services, such as physical or occupational therapy, we can bring in whomever the resident or his or her doctor chooses. We also work closely with At Home Healthcare, so that those new residents who had previously used its services can continue to do so during their transition to Cougar Springs. And we have our own in-house doctor, Dr. John Ross.
Our Community Lifestyle
A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
Built in 2006, Cougar Springs is the newest senior living community in Redmond. Our two-story state-of-the-art building is absolutely gorgeous – inside and out. However, it’s our friendly, loyal staff that truly sets Cougar Springs apart. They take every measure to help new residents settle in and get acquainted with their neighbors, while always taking care to treat every resident with respect, humor and love. Their devotion shows from the moment you join our community and become part of our family. And while we may be the newest senior living community in the area, our management staff has extensive experience in assisted living and has used their expertise to create a safe, vibrant community in which everyone works together as a team to make a real difference in the lives of our residents. For example, our Executive Director has been working in Senior Care for 45 years. As one of our family members wrote in a letter: “Each resident aid and medical aid is resourceful, patient, gentle and respectful. They work well as a team in caring for all of the residents. They get to know the residents as individuals who have families, histories, personalities, dignity and value.”
Monday is our “outing” day, when we take residents on scenic drives, to explore a local pumpkin patch, out for lunch or to visit a casino. Tuesdays are “doctors day,” when we escort residents to their doctors appointments. On Wednesdays, we take residents food shopping, either to Safeway, Albertson’s or Fred Meyer. On Thursday, we drive those residents who see doctors in Bend to their appointments.
Fridays are open to all kinds of activities, from a visit to a local museum to lunch out – always the residents’ choice. Our residents council also meets Fridays, during which they address any resident issues, as well as make suggestions for activities and outings. Throughout the week, we offer all kinds of activities right here at our community, including Sit-ercise seven days a week, to help residents stay limber and build strength. We have monthly sing-alongs and Spotlight Chef days, during which our chef makes special treats, such as caramel apples and banana splits.
Residents enjoy all kinds of games, including pinochle and dominos, as well as such arts and crafts projects as decorating wreathes to hang on their apartment front doors. Every Friday, we have a Happy Hour in the lobby. In addition, we offer educational programs, such as Today in History, and our local librarian brings in books and books on tape. We also host many events throughout the year, including, Veterans Day events, Fourth of July Parade, Halloween Haunted House, elegant Christmas Events, Easter Egg Hunts, and many more — all for the benefit of the residents and community.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
An active member of the Redmond community, Brookdale Redmond partners with several different groups, one of which is a group of students from a local elementary school. As part of our Grandpals program, fourth graders come by twice a week to visit with their “adopted” grandparents. This is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to engage with young people, while at the same time, giving children in the area the chance to learn more the lives and challenges of seniors, including seniors with memory disorders. Children are also invited to our community for all of the major holidays, including Halloween, during which our residents pass out candy in front of their apartments. We have monthly Friends and Family events, featuring a theme dinner and entertainment, such as our formal Christmas Black Tie evening. We are also very involved with the Chamber of Commerce and attend its weekly Coffee Clatter. In addition, our community was the only senior living facility in the region that was invited to join the High Desert Professionals, which puts us in direct touch with many organizations that provide services to our community. In addition, we hold monthly support groups and offer a shoulder for families with a loved one experiencing Alzheimer’s to lean on. We host a monthly Bridge tournament group and welcome new players.
We partner with Walgreen’s for our annual Wellness Fair held here at our community. All kinds of health-related businesses and vendors join us for this day-long event, such as High Desert Vision, the Red Cross, Cascade Swim Center, Department of Health Services, Lion’s Club Eye Bank, Life Flight, among others. Residents and other participants can take advantage of a wide range of free health information, health screenings and can even get their flu shots. In the fall, we also invite vendors in to set up shop, enabling those residents who are less mobile to do their holiday shopping right here in the convenience of their own home. Our community also donates to Meals on Wheels and in honor of our 17 World War II veterans who live here, we also raise money for Traveling Vets. And we host Chamber Meetings in our beautiful court yard in the summer months.
