About Our Community
We have promised ourselves that we shall always treat our residents as we would our own loved ones. Nothing less than our best will do.
A Campus Community
Located on seven acres just across from a park, Brookdale Guadalupe River Plaza, formerly Emeritus at Plaza on the River, recently underwent a major remodel of its independent and assisted living communities. This, combined with our elegant Southern plantation-style architecture, covered patios, multiple courtyards, walking areas and spectacular views of the Guadalupe River, makes our community one of the most desirable senior living campus communities in Texas Hill Country. In addition, we enable seniors to “age in place” by providing these levels of care:
- Independent: Two of our campus buildings are devoted to those residents able to live independently.
- Assisted Living: Our assisted living residents live in a separate two-story building with 38 apartments
- Skilled Nursing: Our skilled nursing facility, which is licensed for 64 beds, is in a separate single-story building designed to feel homelike and welcoming
All buildings are connected, making it easy for residents to take full advantage of our “continuous senior living community.” This unique environment allows residents to easily transition from one care level to the next – so there’s no leaving familiar surroundings or friends just because one’s health need changes. Plus couples can be on the same campus together, even if one lives independently, but the other requires assisted living or skilled nursing care.
The Perfect Location
While just a small city of 22,000, Kerrville has earned the notable distinction of being among the country’s top ten retirement destinations for a town of our size. Come for a visit and you’ll quickly see why! We’re located in the heart of beautiful Texas Hill Country, where creeks and rivers meander through the rugged terrain and rolling hills of the Guadalupe River Valley. In the spring, the hills are ablaze with the spectacular Texas Bluebonnets; in fact, the Wild Seed Farm in Fredericksburg, which is known nationwide for its Bluebonnets and a favorite destination for residents, is just 22 miles from Plaza on the River.
Several small historical German towns are a short drive from our community, and only an hour northwest is San Antonio, home of the River Walk, Fiesta Texas and Sea World. The state capitol of Austin is about 90 minutes, door to door. Our weather is temperate – neither too hot nor cold, and the pace in this part of Texas is just right.
Plus all the amenities a resident could want are right here in Kerrville – restaurants, banks, shopping malls, theaters, parks and outstanding medical facilities, including Peterson Regional Medical Center and the VA Medical Center. We have designated days for errands and appointments, but are very flexible and are almost always able to take residents wherever they need to go – whenever they need transportation.
A Wonderful Selection
Our newly remodeled community offers 143 independent apartments and 38 assisted living units, which are located in three connected buildings. Residents can choose from studios, one-bedroom suites and two-bedroom, two-bath configurations. Both independent and assisted living apartments include:
- Large windows, most with views of the surrounding countryside, many with views of the river.
- Full kitchens in our one- and two-bedroom apartments; kitchenettes in our studios.
- Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, most of which feature walk-in showers.
- More than ample storage space and walk-in closets.
- Patios with sliding glass doors.
- 24-hour emergency call system; should a resident press the button for help, our staff responds immediately.
- All apartments are unfurnished; residents can bring in their own furniture and decorate however they’d like.
Independent residents have full use of several common areas, including living and sitting rooms with flat-screen televisions, DVDs and fireplaces; private dining areas for families to enjoy special celebrations together; a chapel; beauty salon and barber shop; and fitness center. Assisted living residents are always welcome to use any of these common areas, as well as their own, including TV rooms, game rooms and a large dedicated activities room. There are four courtyards, some enclosed, some facing the river.
Licensed for 64 beds, our skilled nursing community has a comfortable homey feel, with a fireplace in the main dining room; our “Bistro,” where residents undergoing rehabilitation dine together; and spacious rooms that can be either semi-private or private, depending upon the needs of the individual resident. We even have a bird aviary!
Strong, Caring Relationships
Our community is fortunate to contract with Rehab Pro, which has its own rehabilitation facility here on campus featuring a spacious fully equipped gym and full-time staff of physical, occupational and speech therapists. Residents can receive up to three hours of therapy each day – and as necessary, can undergo therapy on the weekends as well. Assisted living residents are also welcome to use these services. Our staff of registered and licensed vocational nurses meet daily to discuss resident needs, and meet as required with family and residents to discuss progress, care plans and next steps.
We are also closely connected to staff at the two hospitals and various medical facilities throughout the county, including Home Health, Hospice and the Council on Aging. We can always act as a liaison between care providers and family members as necessary.
While accommodations are important, it truly is the people who make our community. From our Executive Director to Life Enrichment Director to our dining and housekeeping staff, our employees have a strong bond with Plaza on the River. They are extremely knowledgeable about caring for seniors and devoted to our residents. In fact, some have been with our community for more than 10 years.
Everyone who works here will tell you that it feels like one big team – a real sense of family. One key reason for this is the emphasis we place on communication; every day, our staff gets together to talk about goals for the day and week, specific needs of residents and any issues or concerns. We also have a wonderful group of residents, who look out for each other. If they see something amiss, they always let our staff know – and we will intervene. Caring, committed and always concerned – that’s the hallmark of the Brookdale Guadalupe River Plaza team.

Our Community Lifestyle
A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
Every morning, we provide a reminder notice of the upcoming daily activities, helping ensure that our assisted living residents can take advantage of as many activities as possible. Most days begin with an exercise program, often followed by a game of Bridge, then lunch. In the afternoon, we might bring in exotic pets, a local band or chorus to entertain residents. Frequently, we host “Chew and Chats,” a great time for residents to get together and enjoy each other’s company. We also have several religious services each week and offer a variety of clubs, from the Red Hat Society to a Walking Club. We always celebrate holidays in style, with great meals, a party or dance and entertainment; of course, family members are always invited to attend.
Brookdale Guadalupe River Plaza also hosts a community event each month, which might include a luau, community barbeques and socials, or an outing into town to take in a concert or play. We always schedule a trip to the annual Texas State Arts and Craft Fair, which features artists and entertainers from around the state. And our community is just 58 miles to San Antonio and 85 miles to Austin – easy day trips that residents can enjoy when they are looking for a different pace and change in scenery.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
As part of our educational series, our community hosts various outside groups on a monthly basis to come in and discuss topics related to seniors’ needs. Each month features a different subject – from diabetes and heart health to hospice care. The general public and family members are always invited to attend. One of our regular groups is the Hill Country Senior Coalition, which holds two programs each year here, during which healthcare providers and experts are brought in to discuss a specific topic of interest. The general community-at-large is always welcome.
Each of our groups of residents has their own dining room – Independent residents have two! Even skilled nursing residents undergoing rehabilitation dine in their own private “Bistro.” All residents are served three meals a day, which is included in their monthly rent.
Variety is always on the menu! At lunch and dinner, residents can choose from two entrees or an “always available” menu that includes sandwiches, chef salad, grilled chicken salad and homemade soup. And all kinds of delicious snacks – yogurt, cookies, sandwiches, Jell-O, cheese and crackers, for example – are available throughout the day. Holidays are the time when our chefs get to really show off their culinary skills, preparing wonderful feasts for residents and family members alike! Plaza on the River is known for its outstanding food, with everything made from scratch by our talented and experienced chefs. Come by for a tour and lunch and discover why we have such a great reputation when it comes to fine dining!
Skilled nursing residents are offered the same daily menu, with a licensed dietitian overseeing meal preparation. We can also accommodate some dietary restrictions, including residents who have swallowing issues and can only eat thickened liquids, as well as those residents who are on a chopped or pureed diet.
