About Our Community
Whittier, CA Assisted Living
Brookdale Central Whittier, formerly Emeritus at Whittier, is a Whittier, CA Assisted Living community for seniors. It is nestled at the foot of the Whittier Hills and several miles from major freeways both east and west of the town. This provides a quiet neighborhood of tree-lined streets and parks, family homes, apartment complexes and shopping centers not often frequented by outside influences common to freeway corridors. Our shopping centers, community services and village shops all convey the ease and convenience of a family-oriented assisted living community. Our residents are able to walk to these venues or, if preferred, we drive them there using our specially equipped bus or van.
A Wonderful Selection
Brookdale Central Whittier can best be described as a happy and healthy community. Our selection of programs, activities, dining choices and apartment selection caters to the breadth of senior lifestyles – whether it’s a senior actively engaged with every opportunity or one who prefers a more intimate and private lifestyle.
All of our senior apartments are brightly lit with large windows and modern lighting fixtures, and with bathroom facilities modified to accommodate the senior. Some apartments contain kitchenettes for those desiring a kitchen ambiance within their home. All apartments look out to either the garden courtyard or to the surrounding tree-lined neighborhood.
Our community has a beautiful central garden courtyard situated at the heart of the community. All interior rooms look upon this green oasis and all common corridors lead in a circular fashion around this courtyard. It is impossible to get lost in our community.
Our dining room looks out to the garden and many of our daytime activities take place in the courtyard. It makes for a warm and inviting presence when first entering our community via the lobby – a wall of glass where active seniors congregate.
Strong, Caring Professional Relationships
Our care staff and housekeeping staff strongly connect to our residents, assuring that every need is tended to with immediacy and thoroughness. We offer several additional services that enhance the excellent care standard of Brookdale, such as:
- Our Care More Touch Program, which is a Medicare-approved service where outside physicians and nursing staff make house calls to the resident.
- Our Personal Care Program relieves the resident and their loved ones of the responsibility of tending to incontinence issues.
- Brookdale Central Whittier has developed relationships with health providers and resources in our region so that we may provide a seamless continuum of care to all our residents, whatever their medical need.
Every member of our experienced and compassionate staff is available to engage and address the needs of our residents. Safety is our number one concern and every staff member, prior to hire, is given a thorough background check.
Our care staff, licensed by the state of California, performs the duties of care with oversight by our Resident Care Director – a Licensed Vocational Nurse supervising 24/7.
Our housekeeping staff attends both the personal residence and the common areas, often times developing close relationships with our residents. Our Housekeeping Supervisor has worked in this building for many and runs a very tight ship.
Our Life Enrichment Director networks with the surrounding organizations to assuring that a wide array of activities are available to our residents every day.
Our maintenance team and administrative teams work closely with all the departments and residents to assure that all concerns – be they community-wide or resident-specific – are addressed in a timely and compassionate manner.
Our Executive Director and Community Relations Director work closely with the Resident Care Director to assure that our new residents feel welcome and seamlessly integrate with the family we nurture here at Emeritus at Whittier.
Our Community Lifestyle
A Wonderful, Active Lifestyle
At Brookdale Central Whittier, our programs encourage involvement and stimulation, giving older adults the support they need to live as independently as possible. Each day is filled with a calendar full of activities and social programs for our residents, family and staff to enjoy.
In addition to our numerous activities, Brookdale Central Whittier is committed to the mental health of its residents. Our Brain Health Program focuses on the five key areas that enhance brain health, which include social/emotional, physical/active, mental/intellectual, nutritional/well-being, and spiritual/core values. Our activities are designed to provide residents the opportunities, challenges and activities vital to mental engagement.
We also cater to our residents’ need to stay connected to their families outside our walls. Every month, Brookdale Central Whittier plans events where families and loved ones join our residents in stimulating activities and presentations. Some of these are purely recreational while others are informative, such as presentations by outside experts on issues and services most important to the needs of our residents.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
Brookdale Central Whittier is passionate about being an active community. We work closely with people and resources within the Greater Whittier area, including students and faculty at the Rio Honda College, directors and staff at Whittier Hospital and Medical Center, the local Veterans Affairs office, and various nonprofits that serve the interests of senior citizens. Working closely with these organizations, Brookdale Central Whittier provides engaging community activities as well as vital information on medical, financial and governmental services that specifically address the needs of our residents.
At Brookdale Central Whittier, our dining services are very special and receive regular praise from our residents. Our chef, in conjunction with our nutritionist, provides delicious and healthy meals and can easily accommodate any specific dietary requirements our residents require.
Unlike many senior communities, our dining services are ‘restaurant-style.’ Residents and guests take a table of their choice at any time of the day, ordering from a menu that has regular items as well as daily specials. Every day has two featured menu items that cover the full spectrum of culinary interest. Wednesday breakfasts are an open omelet bar where diners pick from an array of 14 different ingredients and the chef personally cooks to order at the bar.
In addition to our dining services, we can provide private meals specially prepared for the occasion when a resident wishes to entertain visitors in a formal setting. Our private dining room seats eight at a grand table with all the ambiance a special meal requires.
