About Our Community

We have promised ourselves that we shall always treat our residents as we would our own loved ones. Nothing less than our best will do.

The Perfect Location

Our community is just five minutes from downtown Hendersonville, North Carolina. Hendersonville is a wonderful retirement town with shopping, restaurants and every amenity our residents could need, including two hospitals and several skilled nursing facilities. What they don’t find here is available in Asheville – the cultural and arts Mecca of the Western North Carolina region – which is just 30 minutes away. Several larger hospitals are also located in Asheville.

A Wonderful Environment

Emeritus at Heritage Lodge was recently refurbished with all new furniture, paint and flooring. Located in a separate T-shaped building, Emeritus at Heritage Lodge offers ten units that are 294 square feet suites and ten suites that are 411 square feet. Each unit has a full bathroom, kitchenette and living area. The larger suites also include a bedroom. We are licensed for 24 residents, so that two of our suites can accommodate two residents who wish to take advantage of our affordable companion living option. Our memory care residents have access to a secured outdoor courtyard area, a nice dining room and family room, where we hold church services and have family get-togethers. Our community also offers an onsite beauty salon/barber shop.

Strong, Caring Professional Relationships

Our community has close partnerships with many outside home health agencies, which are welcome to provide their staff to work with our memory care residents in their own homes. Physical, speech and occupational therapists, home health nurses, hospice, senior helpers – whatever service the family or resident requests, we can help coordinate. We are always happy to make recommendations, but of course, it’s always up to our residents and their loved ones to choose whomever they’d like to work with. A physician also visits our community once a week to care for our memory care residents at Emeritus at Heritage Lodge. We also schedule trips in our van to two local physician offices.

Our Staff

Emeritus at Heritage Lodge is staffed by fully trained memory care professionals. Not only do they receive ongoing training, but the staff undergoes weekly training in Join Their Journey.® a special Brookdale program designed to embrace residents in the moment that they are in – whether they are back in the 1940s, 1920s or present-day. Our staff is trained in getting residents involved in stimulating activities, so that each day is purposeful and fulfilling. They also are trained in various techniques – for example, how to validate and redirect a resident – to handle behaviors common to people with memory disorders. They have taken a keen interest in understanding Join Their Journey and making the program an integral part of the residents’ daily life. Our commitment to joining our residents in their journey – and the journey of family members – is one of the key reasons Emeritus at Heritage Lodge receives so many referrals from outside healthcare and government agencies.

Our Community Lifestyle

A Wonderful Active Lifestyle

From Tai Chi to throwing a resident party “just because,” our full-time Life Enrichment Director keeps an active calendar to meet the needs of our very active resident population. Stain glass, basket weaving, card games, cribbage, bingo, church services, wine tastings and even jam sessions are among the diverse activities planned throughout the month. We also have several clubs, including our book committee and sewing club, and offer exercise classes Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. Residents enjoy movies together on our large-screen television or playing billiards – and always find something interesting to read in our well-stocked library.

Our Life Enrichment Director is a true master of planning, whether that’s planning for an outside musician or puppeteer to come into our senior living community – or taking residents on trips outside of the immediate area. Cruises and trips to the Outer Banks, overnights to Washington D.C., picnics to Blowing Rocks, shopping trips and sight-seeing adventures to see the Biltmore House in Asheville are always on the calendar! If another form of transportation is required, our director takes care of all the details.

Our memory care residents also enjoy outings beyond Emeritus at Heritage Lodge – for picnics, sight-seeing or to enjoy the holiday lights, for example. We also offer a wide range of entertainment for residents as well, including a wonderful production of wooden puppets, and recently, we held a fashion show for our memory care community.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

Our senior living community works closely with the Alzheimer’s Association on a yearlong basis, helping raise money through a variety of events. We join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s each year, as well as sponsor carnivals, car washes, a fashion show, bake sales, spaghetti dinners and more – with the monies going to the association. Some families are surprised by how much we take on, especially for being such a small memory care community.

We also coordinate a support group to which any family or member of the local Hendersonville community who may be caring for someone with a memory disorder is invited. It’s a great way for people to connect with others who share similar concerns and provides a safe, supportive environment to talk through their issues.

In addition, our independent residents are very active in the senior group – Opportunity House in downtown Hendersonville, which provides all kinds of cultural, educational and recreational activities primarily for seniors.

Fine Dining

Our independent residents get together for a meal once a day in our Dogwood Dining Room, typically the evening meal Monday through Friday and brunch or lunch on weekend days. Our chefs cook to order, just like in a fine restaurant. Residents simply order off the menu – we usually have six or seven entrees available, which change every week – along with soup, salad, dessert and beverages. Our chefs and wait staff serve about 140 residents a day! Just about everything is made from scratch – and the menu offers a creative cuisine, thanks to the talents of our wonderful cooks. Our dining room, which is attached to Emeritus at Heritage Lodge, is beautiful and our meals are presented on fine China with linen napkins. In addition to the gracious setting, our staff waits on residents hand and foot! For any resident who wishes, we will pick them up in for dinner in our van.

Our memory care residents have their own dining room and are provided the same quality meals as our other Brookdale memory care communities. Because they can’t always tell us what they’d like for dinner, we show each entrée on a plate and let them point. Making sure they maintain their sense of control and choice is another important part of Join Their Journey. Meals are served on beautiful rust orange Fiesta ware to accommodate issues with depth perception. Finger foods are also available for those residents who like to wander while they eat. Sometimes that’s the best way for us to ensure they get proper nutrition. Three major snacks are served as part of an activity three times a day – at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
