Champion Inverted Mesa Crystal Opens New Opportunities

November 1999: Champion Technologies is producing high frequency inverted mesa fundamental-mode crystals, targeting applications in precision high speed, low-jitter clocks as well as VCXOs, VCTCXOs and custom low-jitter hybrid modules for datacomm applications. The CIM-32 series was developed with Champion's proprietary processing technology and is available immediately in frequencies ranging from 51.84 MHz to 155.52 MHz. The CIM-32 Series offers low series resistance, high pullability, and excellent unit-to-unit and lot-to-lot repeatability. These devices are packaged in an industry standard HC-45 package for through-hole or SMD mounting.

High frequency fundamental-mode crystals are increasing in demand for applications such as precision high speed clocks, VCXOs and VCTCXOs. However, conventional crystal processing utilizing flat quartz blanks has limited the available frequency range to 55 MHz. Using higher quality, "swept" quartz, it has long been possible to produce fundamental-mode inverted mesa crystals with frequencies extending past 200 MHz. However, the higher cost of materials, coupled with slower production throughput have made these resonators undesirable for use in large volume applications. As telecommunication equipment designers continue to demand oscillators that operate at higher frequencies and still retain the smallest possible size and tightest stability, manufacturers have scrambled to fill this growing market. With the introduction of Champions CIM-32 Series, designers can accomplish these goals without breaking their budgets.
