Capture Family Stories this Holiday Season

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving — enjoying the ones you love. This time of year can be bitter sweet as we hold loved ones close and remember those who have passed on. My mother left us in 2009 but would have been 90 this year.

At holiday gatherings, Mom often recounted stories of her idyllic childhood. She grew up in a very small town in the Adirondack Mountains and attended a one room school house where the kids all brought their dogs. The dogs would lay at the back of the class sleeping through most of the day, standing up only for recess and the pledge of allegiance.

Mom told us these stories over and over again so we know them mostly by heart. But I find myself wishing we had taken a video of her telling them. Or that we had asked her to write them down. Time flies during our busy lives and recording history feels like something we will get to someday. Problem is, someday often doesn’t come.

So I encourage you to make this the holiday season that you commit to recording the stories of the older adults in your life. This can be a wonderful project for the young people in the family (who are often the most tech savvy). It is a great way to bring the generations. There are many ways to record stories-among them:

  • StoryCorps an organization that is dedicated to recording the stories of our older generation. They have an app that makes it easy.
  • Film Story is another app that helps edit photos and videos into a finished product.
  • One Day is an app that helps create a story by providing questions and creating a beautiful finished product.

These are just a few of the ways to go about recording family history. The most important thing is to do it now while the ones you love are still with you. I promise you will treasure them for years to come.

Be Well on Purpose!
