Grace Sails a Sailboat

Grace K., 85, from Brookdale Merrillville in Merrillville, IN, has always enjoyed traveling. She lived near Wolf Lake throughout most of her life. She always saw the wind fill the sails of the boats on the lake and dreamed of being out there too.

Many years ago, Grace rode on a sailboat in Egypt on the Nile River. She has always cherished these memories, and would like to ride on a sailboat again. Throughout her travels, Grace went boating in several regions of the world; South America, China, Japan and Korea. Even with all of these experiences on a boat, she had never sailed one herself.

Grace was an art teacher for 42 years and worked with a wide range of students, including mentally disabled children. Grace taught elementary students and then high school students in the East part of Chicago. She would take money out of her own pocket to buy the needed materials for her classroom. She felt that it was important for everyone to feel accomplished, and knew the students needed the materials to complete their goals. After retirement, Grace returned to the schools she worked at to help with after-school functions.

Grace helped students achieve their goals, so Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale Senior Living were excited to help her achieve her lifelong goal to sail a sailboat. She finally had the opportunity to sail on Wolf Lake with Hammond Marina on September 19, 2016.

Grace said sailing makes her “feel happy. You feel physical with the wind. You as an individual feel personally involved.”
