Our quiet three-story retirement community is located in a park-like setting and offers a total of 102 senior apartments with seven different floor plans. We also offer friendship suites where two residents, who either don’t want to live alone or wish to save on rent, can share accommodations. Residents are welcome to bring in their own furniture or we can provide it for them, and your apartment can be painted a special color and decorated any way you wish.
Residents and their families can socialize in the many tastefully decorated common areas located throughout our home. A beautiful sunroom has floor-to-ceiling windows and opens onto our outside courtyard. This is often the location for both our Shabbat and Catholic services. We also have a spacious and bright living room where one of our three pianos is located, as well as a computer room, dining room, theater room and a barber shop and beauty salon.
We always focus on the health, well-being and happiness of our residents, and this directs everything we do. Several day excursions are planned each week that include shopping trips, outings to nearby parks, visits to the Hillwood Museum, the Textile Museum, The National Gallery, Smithsonian, the Air and Space Museum and the Women’s Art Museum. We also attend concerts at Strathsmore Concert Hall and transportation is provided in our own mini-bus.
As we like to tell our new residents, “you have to make a real effort to be bored at our community.” We have a very active social program that includes bingo, Fit after Fifty fitness programs, movie nights, discussions about food, crafts, games, bible studies, Gift of Torah discussions, art shows, lobby socials, and at least six concerts are held at our community every month.
Optimum Life is a bold initiative that defines the way we live. By balancing six key dimensions of wellness with purpose, emotional, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual fulfillment, Optimum Life helps you live at your peak level within a lifestyle that promotes health and wholeness. Intended as a journey of self- examination and discovery, it includes services, features and benefits that allow each resident to reach these goals, regardless of real or perceived limitations.
Substantial investments in our culinary program and staffing, allow us to provide mealtime experiences that set our communities apart from the competition. From a Culinary Arts Training Program for chefs, to our select seasonings and bakery options, Brookdale has created one of the industry’s leading dining services. Our fine dining experience is prepared by a trained chef and receives nutritional support and recommendations from a registered dietician.
Three restaurant-style meals are served each day in the group dining room and snacks are provided throughout the day. We continue to meet the nutritional needs of residents with dining choices that offer satisfying entrees while supporting their health and well-being. Each meal offers a selection of delicious choices, sensational service and we always accommodate special restrictions and requests.
To help alleviate any confusion or added stress, we keep mealtimes very routine for our Memory Care community. Residents all sit together at the same time and same table each day. Meals are served on colorful plates and tablecloths so they can more easily distinguish their food. We also provide easy-to-eat snacks between meals, helping to ensure these residents get the nutrition and calorie count they need.
As the population ages, more people are discovering assisted senior living and the peace of mind we offer. Our community’s approach focuses on being a trusted partner and listening to your needs, understanding the life you want for yourself or a loved one and customizing a solution that puts that life within reach.
Brookdale offers care programs and secure environments for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. We believe that no matter where an individual is in their life, each has the right to live in a dignified manner and enjoy meaningful experiences every day.
Deeply rooted in a person-centered approach, our program focuses on sustaining feelings of belonging and purpose while seeking to preserve a sense of self. Providing excellent dementia care is a complex task that requires ongoing guidance and teaching for our staff members. All of our highly trained associates receive initial and on-going training in proper techniques, approach and care for seniors with dementia.
An established set of protocols and techniques enables our team to intervene when challenging behaviors resulting from dementia arise. Our whole-community philosophy is the key that empowers staff members to identify any unmet needs and be a part of the solution.
Our retirement community has its own medical director who comes here on a regular basis to oversee our nursing staff and to provide individual care. For the convenience of our residents, we also work with FOX Rehab which provides physical, occupational and speech therapy in a dedicated room in our building. They see residents by appointment and can be available five days a week. In addition, we offer monthly services of a mobile dentist as well as a podiatrist, and both make visits to our community. Labs, x-rays and prescription updates can also be handled onsite.
We have a staff of about 50 employees including eight members on our management team. Unlike some Assisted Living facilities, we employ Licensed Practical Nurses to provide medication management and general care. They work diligently to continually assess the health needs of each resident and provide regular updates to their loved ones. Our LPNs also check in on residents every day and are trained to spot warning signs that might suggest a resident needs additional medical care and support. Our caring staff of resident assistants provides support with daily living.
We have a staff member who, along with our Memory Care director, is certified by the Alzheimer’s Association to facilitate support groups. These groups provide education and support to help our family members cope with the changes their loved ones are experiencing. The community is also welcome and we plan to have our program listed with the local Alzheimer’s Association to encourage drop-ins.
Brookdale Potomac is strongly connected to the community. Every month, there are several community groups including our local Girl Scouts, a breast-feeding group, and a professional networking group that host their get-togethers here. Residents are always invited to attend.
