Located in the small town of Sugar Land, with tall oak trees lining its streets and bordering the Brazos River, our community is minutes from restaurants, Walmart, First Colony Mall, and the pedestrian-friendly, Sugar Land Town Square. Several hospitals are close by, including St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
Brookdale Sugar Land offers three senior apartment styles, including a two-room suite featuring a kitchenette with a sink and refrigerator and a bedroom. We also have an alcove, and smaller studio apartment. All senior apartments include a private, handicapped-accessible bathroom with seated showers and grab bars, closets, built-in bookshelves and cabinet, all utilities including basic cable, and 24-hour emergency call services.
Our community has several common areas located throughout our one-story building, including a lovely foyer area with the largest aviary in Sugar Land — home to 15 beautiful birds that residents love to watch. Right off our dining room is a fully enclosed outdoor courtyard area with a covered walkway that connects one side of our community to the other.
Our dining room, which is equipped with a piano, also serves as a chapel on Sundays. Our activities room features vending machines and full kitchen. We have two separate television rooms — one in the parlor and another in our sunroom, which opens onto the courtyard.
Our Memory Care community has both private suites and friendship suites. Often, families choose to have their loved one share accommodations, not just for the cost-savings, but for the companionship. A shared suite creates a positive dependency and residents tend to watch out for each other.
There is a separate dining room set up much like a homey old-fashioned country kitchen with a separate TV area. The dining room is also used for many of the community activities. With supervision, our residents are also welcome to use the full kitchen in the main dining room. In addition, residents have full access to their own private, secured courtyard with planted walkways, a patio, and a gazebo. There is also a garden area with raised beds for them to tend flowers and vegetables.
Brookdale’s unique Optimum Life approach to resident activities balances six key dimensions of wellness — purposeful, emotional, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual. Intended as a journey of self-examination and discovery, it includes services, features and benefits that allow each resident to reach these goals, regardless of real or perceived limitations.
The Weston Group, located in our building, provides physical, occupation and speech therapy to many of our residents. The therapists can see residents in their room, in one of our common areas or in the fully equipped exercise room. In addition, Southwest Home Health also has its office here, should a resident require more extensive nursing care, such as wound care, respiratory treatments or insulin shots.
Brookdale Sugar Land is active with the local Alzheimer’s Association and we participate in the Memory Walk. Our Executive Director is also a speaker on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Foundation in Fort Bend County, as well as part of the Senior Trust Alliance, an ethical group that advocates for seniors rights.
Our community is next door to the Chamber of Commerce, which often provides speakers to address topics of interest, such as the Aid and Attendance program for veterans. We also partner closely with the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, a national organization volunteering to help seniors and veterans. Members from the club will come to our community for bingo games, and to celebrate our residents’ birthdays each month.
Recently, we hosted Art and Soul, an opportunity for our residents to showcase their artwork. Many families and members of the community joined us to enjoy the artwork and to savor delicious pralines handmade by our chef, while being entertained by one of our residents who plays the piano.
The longevity of our staff underscores how much they love working with seniors and how much pride they take in their jobs. They are extremely compassionate, they listen carefully and always put the residents first. Our memory care community has a dedicated staff, who undergo extensive training in working with people with memory disorders and in Join Their Journey, the Brookdale memory care program.
