What is a Continuing Care Community?

What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community?

A continuing care retirement community (also known as a CCRC) is a community that offers multiple care levels all on one campus. These multiple care levels — often referred to as a “continuum of care” — are meant to provide either most or all of the care you’ll need throughout your lifetime.*

Many senior living communities only offer one or two levels of care, but a CCRC traditionally provides at least three different care levels. Which could include independent living, assisted living, memory care, and/or skilled nursing and rehabilitation — depending on the community.

At a CCRC, you can rest easy knowing that if your health changes in the future — you’re in a place that has the resources and staff available to meet those needs.

Rental or Life Care

CCRCs are available in two options: a rental or a Life Care model.

A rental CCRC operates on a monthly rental fee basis. You pay a monthly fee based on the level of care you receive. For example, assisted living usually costs more per month than independent living. It’s like paying rent on a condo. Residents currently in need of assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing can get the additional support they need with our rental CCRCs, which cater to specific care needs determined on a month-to-month basis.

A Life Care* CCRC charges a monthly fee, similar to the rental CCRC. However, Life Care residents also pay an additional upfront entry fee. But this extra entry fee comes with one very unique benefit that isn’t available through the rental option.

When you join Life Care, you will receive guaranteed care throughout your entire lifespan, even if your financial resources are eventually exhausted due to no fault of your own.* That’s right. You won’t have to worry about running out of money. Because if you do, you’ll still continue to receive quality care in the same excellent location, surrounded by the same great people.

So by paying an extra entry fee for Life Care, you get in return the priceless knowledge that your entire care plan and retirement is set for life. You’ll never have to worry or stress about what might happen if you ran out of money.

Paying for a CCRC

The cost of a CCRC varies depending on certain factors, such as whether it’s a rental or Life Care option, your CCRC contract, and the style of living accommodations. But below are a few estimates on the amount you’d pay for a CCRC.

Rental CCRC — On average, your monthly rental fee may range between $3,000 to $6,000, depending on the type of accommodations and the level of care you need. But that monthly payment covers almost all your living expenses such as rent, onsite amenities, daily meals, assistance from staff, your care services, as well as many other perks.

Life Care CCRC — Your monthly fee will be roughly $2,500 to $3,500, plus an additional upfront fee that typically ranges from $150,000 to $300,000. But with the Life Care option, tax deductions are often available for portions of the buy-in fee and monthly service fee — typically up to 40 percent. You also often save money in the the long-run by choosing the Life Care option (as opposed to the rental option) because your buy-in fee invests in your future, allowing you to receive more care when you need it at a lower monthly cost.
