There has traditionally been an expectation that family members can help with errands and daily tasks, but that’s not always realistic. In our highly-mobile society, many seniors live hundreds or even thousands of miles from their adult children, but even seniors with family nearby may prefer not to ask them for help, because it makes them feel like a burden. Brookdale’s Personalized Living services offer a valuable solution to these concerns, and can help seniors stay independent, healthy and thriving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Private Duty Home Care

Private duty caregivers provide a wide range of services. Some of the most common ones include:

• Bathing

• Grooming and dressing

• Medication management

• Light meal preparation

• Walking companion

• Household care and organization

• Other supportive and concierge services

Typically our caregivers complete a pre-hire screening for skills, undergo a criminal background check, as well as provide a list of references before getting hired to ensure they meet Brookdale standards. Once they are hired, caregivers often undergo special training and continuing education.

Home health focuses on providing skilled, medical services at home after you've experienced a change in condition, injury or exacerbation of a chronic disease. Typically, home health is meant to be short-term and often treats patients over a period of 60 days. Primary services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, certified nursing assistance, medical social work and psychiatric nursing.

Private duty can be used to serve medical or non-medical needs, either on a short-term or long-term basis. Primary services are registered nursing, certified nursing assistance and concierge services, including transportation, pet care, housekeeping, shopping, cooking and more.

Some people believe that hiring a caregiver privately will help them save money or give them greater control over the service, but screening prospective employees takes time and financial resources. If you choose to privately hire a caregiver referred to you from a nurse registry or from a friend or neighbor, then you typically assume the responsibilities of an employer by supervising care and providing insurance and payroll services. This can often add unwanted stress.

If you work with a licensed private duty agency, like Brookdale, then you'll typically be getting a caregiver who has already completed a pre-hiring screening for skills, criminal background, references and knowledge level. The agency also acts as the employer so you don't have to shoulder the responsibility. Additional benefits of working with an agency include: added supervision and quality assurance over the caregiver, provided liability insurance, continued training and education, payroll management, and coverage if the regular caregiver gets sick.
