Where to Start

If you are overwhelmed by the thought of moving your loved one to an assisted living community, it may be beneficial to print out our checklist of important things to remember. There are two primary areas to consider -- what to pack and what to purchase.

What to Purchase

In addition to what you pack for the move, there may be additional items that you will need to purchase. It's important to keep in mind that your loved one may be moving into an apartment that is much smaller than their current home when considering what else to purchase.  However, there may be some items necessary to buy.  Use the following checklist to help you determine what you may need to purchase for your loved one to live comfortably in an assisted living apartment.

Entertainment

  • Magazines
  • Novels
  • Cable
  • TV/DVD Player
  • Radio
  • Photo albums

Talk to your loved one about how they would best like to use their time. If you know they enjoy reading, take them to a local bookstore and allow them to stock up on novels that will last for months. This will make moving into assisted living an easier transition because they already have things they enjoy to occupy their time.

Decor

  • Picture frames
  • Decorative Rug
  • Bathroom accessories
  • Artwork
  • Clock
  • Vase of flowers

While you want your loved one’s assisted living apartment to resemble their former residence as much as possible, some decor items may be too out-dated or damaged to move. Take your loved one to pick out new decor items that they can easily integrate with the items they are moving from their old residence.

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Soap
  • Razor
  • Make-up

Brookdale assisted living facilities provide residents with a variety of amenities including a hair salon. Be sure you find out what will be available to your loved one before you go shopping for toiletries.

Clothing

  • Undergarments
  • Socks
  • Sweaters
  • Robe
  • Blankets

Since your loved one will no longer be doing their own laundry in most cases, it is important to have extras of essential clothing items. It will reduce stress for your loved one to know that they always have the essentials on hand.

Food and Beverages

  • Favorite snacks
  • Favorite beverages
  • Healthy food
  • Candy

While Brookdale provides residents well-balanced, gourmet meals, our kitchens may not offer the specific snacks and beverages that your loved one prefers. Purchase a selection of all your loved one’s specific food cravings and keep them stocked in a cabinet in their new residence.
