Seeing the price of senior living may be jarring to you at first. But this often comes from a lack of understanding what they’re really paying for, according to Michael McCamish, senior director of web marketing and development at Brookdale.  

Senior living is a bundle, not just a mortgage payment or monthly rent. What seniors may not realize is that the cost of senior living includes services homeowners or renters usually pay for separately, like utilities, cable and internet and HOA fees. A senior living community also eliminates costs like lawn care, maintenance, home repairs and other payments.

“When you first see the pricing, it can be confusing or scare people off,” says McCamish. “But if you look at everything it’s really paying for, you realize it’s a good value.”

So, what are seniors really paying for when they live in a community? The answer depends on the individual.

“The pricing really depends on what services and level of care an individual needs. What you might need versus what I might need could be two very different things. Do you need assistance getting ready each day, showering or taking your medication? Or are you more independent?”

Different services mean different pricing from person to person. It also means a living arrangement that’s tailored to each and every resident’s wants and needs. What’s more, it provides for a level of care that changes as residents age.

“We want people who are looking for senior living for themselves or for their loved ones to understand what the costs really are, and what value it brings to them,” says McCamish, who assisted with the effort to make pricing transparent at Brookdale.

“Really, we just want to help people.”

Whether those people end up becoming residents at Brookdale doesn’t matter to McCamish and his team. Their goal is simply to help seniors and those who care for them make better, more informed decisions about where they’ll spend their later years of life.
