Write Them a Note

Writing your loved ones notes or letters to let them know how much you appreciate them is a simple gesture that can go a long way. With the art of letter writing becoming a thing of the past, receiving a hand-written note or letter can be such a treat. Whether you find a postcard or funny card that reminds you of your friend or family member or you bring out your favorite stationary, letting your loved ones know you were thinking of them is sure to bring a smile to their face.

Give Them a Call

Calling or FaceTiming your loved ones is another easy way to show your appreciation. Even if you don’t have anything specific to thank them for, it’s always nice to spend a few minutes catching up. Check to see how that dance recital went or ask about their recent vacation! It’s easy to wait to save all the catching up until you see them in person, which is definitely cherished time, but a quick conversation over the phone can make someone’s day if you don’t get to see each other as often as you might like.

Put Together a Thank-You Basket

Maybe your loved ones have spent a lot of time helping you move or downsize recently, or maybe they’ve been there for you during a difficult time. A gesture of gratitude like putting together a thank-you gift basket of their favorite things could be the perfect way to say thank you. You can either make your own gift basket or purchase a pre-made gift basket. Whatever you decide, just keep in mind that you don’t have to fill your basket with expensive items. A combination of homemade items, thrifted treasures and small treats that you think your loved one would enjoy can make a wonderful gift.

Schedule Time With Them Regularly

If your loved ones live close by, try scheduling a regular activity or signing up for a class with them. A weekly trip to the Saturday farmer’s market or enrolling in that local pottery class you’ve always wanted to try can be even more enjoyable if you get to spend time with someone you love. With everything to accomplish each day, it’s easy to go long periods of time without spending time with friends and family. You go about your daily life then suddenly realize that it’s been months since you’ve spent quality time with your best friend or family members! By scheduling a few hours every week or month to spend with the people you love, there are more opportunities to let them know how thankful you are for their presence in your life.

Just Tell Them!

Just tell your loved ones that you’re thankful for them and that you’re happy that they are in your life as often as you can. It can be that simple. Now, we understand that expressing gratitude comes easier to some than others, but think about how good you feel when someone tells you they are happy to have you around. Certain positive psychology research studies have indicated that gratitude is associated with greater happiness, so not only will showing your loved ones gratitude make them feel appreciated, but it can also make you happier!

Although holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are a great time to tell your loved ones how thankful you are for them, don’t wait until then! Make the most of today, and reach out to someone you love with one of the ideas above or in a way that you know will make them feel the most loved.
