On the latest episode of Great Full Life, we were excited to welcome Michelle Barrett, a personal stylist who specializes in curated capsule wardrobes. If you haven’t had the chance to watch the full webcast yet, here are three takeaways you can use to refresh your personal style.

Consider getting your colors done.

You may have heard of a color analysis or “getting your colors done” before. This trend that pops up every few decades considers a person’s features, like their hair color, skin color and undertones and eye color, to help determine what colors they look best in. The different color pallets are referred to as color seasons. Michelle noted that sometimes the original color pallets needs to be adjusted some to best suits a person. For example, the traditional color pallets don’t often consider someone’s hair turning grey. The point of getting your colors done, is to help you look more vibrant and feel more confident, so if you do decide to figure out what “season” you are, keep in mind that you might need to make a few adjustments to work best for you.

Think about your lifestyle.

Your wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle and how you spend your time. Michelle’s tip is to “look at what you do over a month and divide it by 100%.” For example, if you determine that you spend 60% of your time at work, then 60% of your wardrobe should be work related. You can also consider how often you do laundry to decide how many of an item you need in your wardrobe. If you like wearing jeans most days but only do laundry once a week, you might want to consider owning more than one pair.

If you spend a majority of your time at home or hanging out with friends but are tired of wearing loungewear all of the time, Michelle pointed out that comfy options have come a long way. With options like cute athleisure sets or just more comfortable versions of wardrobe staples, like jeans or slacks, you can feel fabulous even if you just plan on hanging out at home.

Wardrobe feeling cluttered? Consider downsizing.

Not only can too much choice can feel overwhelming when choosing what to wear, but if your closet is stuffed to the brim, who knows what could be hiding behind your collection of puffy coats or your assortment or summer tees! Michelle suggests going clothing category by clothing category to help decide what to keep. If you have ten pairs of black pants, think about which ones you wear the most. Do you need all ten pairs? Another downsizing trick Michelle mentioned is to turn all of your hangers one way in your closet. As you wear an item, turn its hanger around. At the end of the season, assess what you never wore and think about if it’s actually something you want to hold onto.
