“Grandmacore hobbies” or hobbies that are typically associated with older adults are trending on social media and making their way to a younger audience. Younger generations like members of Gen Z and millennials have turned to cozy hobbies that encourage enjoying the slower moments in life and evoke fond memories of time spent with loved ones.

Whether you’ve been participating in these hobbies for years or you’re interested in picking up something new, consider sitting down with a grandchild to share your knowledge of the hobby or learn it alongside them! Here are just a few “grandmacore” hobbies you could enjoy with a loved one:

Crochet and Knitting

What’s more comforting than finding a nice place to sit and work on your latest fiber art project? Both crocheting and knitting have exploded in popularity on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, with people sharing their knowledge or their own journeys learning a new craft. Knitting and crochet are wonderful skills to pass along to the next generation, so if you’re an experienced fiber artist, consider teaching someone you love. You could even look into online or local “knit alongs” or “crochet alongs” to join with your grandchild, where you can join other members of the community as you all create the same item.

Sewing

With vintage and second-hand shopping being so popular with the younger generations, more and more people are learning to alter or reimagine their thrifty finds through sewing. Creating something you love from scratch or being able to make your clothes fit just right is such a valuable skill to share with others. Consider pulling out some of your old sewing patterns to create with your grandchild or learn a new sewing technique that you can practice together.

Needlework

There’s nothing like seeing an intricate cross-stitch piece framed on a wall or receiving a beautiful embroidered napkin or tablecloth as a gift—so much time and love goes into needlework projects. With endless possibilities of what to stitch, needlework is the perfect craft to do with a grandchild. You could either catch up while working on your own unique projects or you may decide to both work on a cross-stitch or embroidery kit—this way you’ll both end up with a similar final product that makes you think of your loved one whenever you see it.

Gardening and Canning

There are so many different types and levels of gardening, making it the perfect hobby to share with someone you love. If you and your grandchildren enjoy growing your own food in your gardens, spending a weekend harvesting and canning the contents of your garden will set you and your family up for a year of delicious, shelf-stable treats. You and your grandchildren can swap canning recipes or even produce from your gardens if you decide to grow different items.

Baking

If you and your grandchildren love to bake, consider pulling out family recipes that have been in the family for generations and giving them a try together. You could whip up some of your favorite baked goods that you used to make with your parents or grandparents to pass down the tradition or attempt those recipes that have been sitting untouched in the box for years. If your family doesn’t have many recipes lying around, you and your grandchildren can always turn to online platforms like Pinterest where you can find countless new and exciting dishes to try.

Scrapbooking

The detail-oriented pages of a scrapbook take time and patience, so having someone to craft with can make the activity even more enjoyable than it already is. Scrapbooking is making a comeback online—between junk journaling and more traditional forms of scrapbooking, people of all ages are flocking to the hobby. If you choose to scrapbook with your grandchild, you can spend the time showing each other different techniques on how to preserve your memories in the most eye-catching way. Whether you decide to work on a family scrapbook together or keep to your own projects while sitting together, making a scrapbook with a loved one is the perfect way to simultaneously catch up on what’s happening in each other’s lives and take a walk down memory lane together.
