- How We Help Keep Your Patients Moving at Brookdale
December 15, 2022
In order to help maintain optimum health, adults ages 65 and older need at least 150 minutes of moderate physical exercise per week, muscle strengthening activities at least two days per week, and balance-improving activities at least three days per week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some studies link regular physical activity with improved mental cognition and brain health. All too often, however, inactivity increases with age, with 26.9% of adults ages 65 to 74 reporting no physical activity beyond work or baseline activities of daily living in the last month. Brookdale’s long-standing Optimum Life® framework is a holistic approach to overall wellness whose signature programs enable our community leaders to find unique ways to encourage residents to stay physically, emotionally and spiritually fit.
Optimum Life® guides our “Signatures” programs and offerings, which are exclusive to Brookdale and support six dimensions of wellness: purposeful, social, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical. We offer options for exercise, nutritious food and collaborative clinical approaches through these programs to contribute to our residents’ overall health and well-being.
Consistent programming helps Brookdale residents stay active and healthy. Here are just some of the physical and cognitive wellness Optimum Life® signature programs.
B-Fit
The B-Fit program can help Brookdale residents get stronger over time while enjoying the endorphins that exercise and community have to offer. With eight class options that incorporate the latest exercise research and guidelines for health, B-Fit classes provide an engaging social experience that makes physical fitness truly enjoyable. These are just some of the activities that may be offered in our B-Fit program:
Brain Fit
We place just as much importance on exercising the mind as we do the body. The mental fitness regimen offered through the Brookdale Brain Fit program can help your patient try to combat symptoms of memory loss and conditions like dementia by providing them with brain-healthy exercises. The Brain Fit program helps form new connections in the brain through mental stimulation, memory work and cognitive processing. Here are some of the ways we may help residents strengthen their mind:
Optimum Life® Health Talks
Whether it’s empowering the body, strengthening the mind or learning to love exercise, at Brookdale we foster a lifestyle of learning. Through the Optimum Life® Health Talks program, Brookdale clinical staff speak on a variety of topics related to health and wellness using the latest evidence-based research, engaging anecdotes and interactive group discussion.
