Library Assistant

Are you a book lover looking for potentially lower-stress work during retirement? Consider becoming a library assistant. Your duties may include checking materials out and in, processing new materials, collecting fines and fees, answering questions and issuing library cards. Depending on the library branch, you may also have opportunities to lead a book club or assist with an event. These are great ways to share your interests and passions and connect with the broader community.

Tutor

You’ve spent your life learning and training in your particular field. Why not pass that knowledge down to the next generation? If you have expertise in a particular subject or a background in education, working as a tutor lets you make a genuine difference in someone’s life. As a tutor, you can set your own hours and, if you work independently, your own rates. You may also have the option to tutor from the comfort of your home. Best of all, it’s very rewarding to see a student grasp a subject you’ve helped them understand.

Event Ticket Taker or Usher

If you love sports, concerts or other live events, becoming an event ticket taker or usher could be a fun way to fill your retirement. You could be tasked with welcoming attendees, checking tickets or directing guests to their seats or another location in the building. Unlike a normal 9-to-5, this role revolves around event schedules — meaning you might have a bit more flexibility with the shifts you work. Whether you’re a social butterfly who enjoys interacting with guests or someone who thrives in a lively environment, working at an event venue could be a great fit.

Tour Guide

You can become a tour guide almost anywhere that has tourist attractions, historical sites and museums or natural wonders waiting to be explored. Museums and art galleries, national parks or cities and towns with notable landmarks are often looking for enthusiastic individuals to lead their tours. Combining your knowledge and passion for a particular topic or location, you’ll create an immersive, engaging and educational experience your guests are sure to love.

Retail Associate

Retail is a classic choice for part-time work at any age. Offering flexible hours and the chance to interact with a variety of people, a retail role will keep you busy, while still remaining manageable. You could act as a greeter, cashier or sales associate, or if you’re physically able, you might restock shelves or do inventory. Working in retail is all about finding the right environment for you. Consider applying to specialty stores or local small businesses like a bookstore, craft supply store, museum gift shop, hardware store or a nursery and garden center.

Receptionist

Local businesses are often looking for people with friendly personalities to staff their front desk. Whether it’s answering phones, greeting visitors or performing other administrative duties, receptionist work is dynamic and relies on skills you likely developed throughout your career. Try choosing a location that has a steady stream of visitors, but isn’t too hectic, such as a small medical clinic or dental office, a local community center or a senior center. This relatively low-impact role offers regular social interaction, keeps your mind engaged and provides extra spending money without being too physically demanding.

Administrative Assistant

Put your organizational and communication skills to good use in an administrative role. Transferable skills like high attention to detail, effectively managing schedules and keeping operations running smoothly could make you a valuable part of any team. And depending on the company, you may have the opportunity to work remotely or on a hybrid schedule if you’d prefer. This is a good choice if you want something that isn’t physically demanding and provides flexible hours, but still allows you to engage with a larger team and provide vital support.

There’s no single perfect part-time job for every retiree. The right role should align with your interests, abilities, preferred schedule and motivations behind returning to work. Whether you want to earn extra income, socialize with new people or put your years of experience to use, choose a role that adds purpose and joy to your retirement without sacrificing the flexibility and relaxation you’ve earned.
